How to remove DNS Unlocker Adware

Recently got infected by the DNS Unlocker adware

Let me tell you it's a piece of crap. What have we become when we simply inject ads to make extra cash?

What kind of sick world is this? Since this is a new laptop, I have only visited known legitimate websites (CodeProject, StackOverflow, Edx.org, Instructables etc.) I do all my leisure browsing on an old computer

Only really downloaded a couple of software from SourceForge (Audacity, camstudio, FileZilla)...(Yes, I know SourceForge can't be trusted anymore now o.o) yet, I still got this adware!! And even when I do install a software, I unclick all third party products

This honestly scares me, that something like DNS unlocker can still find its way to my computer.

The steps to remove it was quite simple, but the google results have all been quite misleading (I strongly believe those are posted by whoever created this adware in the first place) and it took me some time to figure it out.

So here's what I've done

1. Remove the Unlocker from Control Panel

2. Remove its extensions from your browser (You might not have to do this step, I didn't)

3. Check your DNS Settings (Courtesy of this tutorial

Type Control Panel in the Windows Search field, hit enter. From then on navigate to Network and Internet —> Network and Sharing Center —-> Change Adapter Settings.

Right-click your active internet connection and click properties. Under the Networking tab, scroll down to Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Highlight (left click) that then click on properties. Both options in this window should be automatic! The first option should be set to “Obtain an IP address automatically” and the second should be set to “Obtain DNS server address automatically!”

4. (May or may not be optional, I did it, don't know if it actually helped)

Run AdwCleaner followed by Junkware Removal Tool at bleepingcomputer.com

5. This was what troubled me the most.

After running all the tools and restarted my computer. I STILL HAD THE DNS Unlocker ads in Opera

And I came across this reddit post and somebody mentioned CLEAR YOUR CACHE AND COOKIES!!

So, I put this theory test in Private browsing (Incognito) mode, and guess what? No more ads!!

Conclusion? Clear your cache!

Hope it helps

Tools used to create my website

I thought it would be pretty funny to list the technologies I've used on the website just because I have used quite a number of them for such a simple website

Home page
The home page is made with a simple HTML + CSS with a bit of a static page generation

Utilities
- Magic 8 ball: reactJS
- Text templating: Javascript

Labs
- Audio lab: C# Asp.net MVC with AngularJS
- TC experience : JQuery

Blog
- nibbleblog: php? Okay, this doesn't count since I didn't make it

Can you guess the order they were done in? :)

For me, this really is ground for experimentation.

It actually made me really appreciate the power of Javascript

Welcome to swu's lab

Yay! Now I have a blog. This is when I feel the website is finally taking off.

Let me explain what this place is. It is more than a website, this will be a place where ideas fly.

I call it the Incubator of ideas, I hope this is not only an incubator for me, but also for all of you.

There is a dreamer in all of us, we all just need a little push from others, and I hope I can provide that push.

That is why I will be documenting my ideas here, and I hope you will, too.

It's not JUST a website, it is also a place to experiment, and to dream

Just as a quick outline, here's what I have planned for this website

1) Utilities - Any fun utilities I made, they will most likely be a one page javascript utility

2) Lab - This is where I will be putting on some more involved projects.

3) Blog - Where I will explain the thought process behind the projects I put up on the website as well as any tools I have created to streamline this process
