Recently got infected by the DNS Unlocker adware

Let me tell you it's a piece of crap. What have we become when we simply inject ads to make extra cash?

What kind of sick world is this? Since this is a new laptop, I have only visited known legitimate websites (CodeProject, StackOverflow,, Instructables etc.) I do all my leisure browsing on an old computer

Only really downloaded a couple of software from SourceForge (Audacity, camstudio, FileZilla)...(Yes, I know SourceForge can't be trusted anymore now o.o) yet, I still got this adware!! And even when I do install a software, I unclick all third party products

This honestly scares me, that something like DNS unlocker can still find its way to my computer.

The steps to remove it was quite simple, but the google results have all been quite misleading (I strongly believe those are posted by whoever created this adware in the first place) and it took me some time to figure it out.

So here's what I've done

1. Remove the Unlocker from Control Panel

2. Remove its extensions from your browser (You might not have to do this step, I didn't)

3. Check your DNS Settings (Courtesy of this tutorial

Type Control Panel in the Windows Search field, hit enter. From then on navigate to Network and Internet —> Network and Sharing Center —-> Change Adapter Settings.

Right-click your active internet connection and click properties. Under the Networking tab, scroll down to Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Highlight (left click) that then click on properties. Both options in this window should be automatic! The first option should be set to “Obtain an IP address automatically” and the second should be set to “Obtain DNS server address automatically!”

4. (May or may not be optional, I did it, don't know if it actually helped)

Run AdwCleaner followed by Junkware Removal Tool at

5. This was what troubled me the most.

After running all the tools and restarted my computer. I STILL HAD THE DNS Unlocker ads in Opera

And I came across this reddit post and somebody mentioned CLEAR YOUR CACHE AND COOKIES!!

So, I put this theory test in Private browsing (Incognito) mode, and guess what? No more ads!!

Conclusion? Clear your cache!

Hope it helps
